Royals hope to find a way to slow down Kyle Stowers, Marlins
July 19 - The Kansas City Royals have a problem, and it's one that the rest of the league shares. How do you pitch to Kyle Stowers? After all, over his past 10 at-bats, the Miami Marlins' All-Star has blasted five home runs and racked up 11 RBIs. That includes a walk-off, two-run homer in the 10th inning on Friday night, giving the Marlins an 8-7 win over the Royals. The second game of the series is set for Saturday, and that gives the Royals little time to figure out Stowers. "What he's doing is special," Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said of Stowers. "Kyle is easy to root for because of how humble he is and how hard he works." Stowers, who has three walk-off hits this year, is putting up some great numbers in his age 27 season, hitting .298 with 21 homers, 59 RBIs and a .935 OPS. "I'm at a loss for words," Stowers said after Friday's game. "It's getting crazier and crazier." Stowers is a big reason why the Marlins are 20-10 over their past 30 games, with his stellar play helping Miami overcome plenty of adversity. For example, just prior to Friday's game, the Marlins announced that starting third baseman Connor Norby is expected to miss up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his left wrist over the All-Star break. Besides Stowers, the Marlins have another big bat in Agustin Ramirez, who leads National League rookies in homers (14), RBIs (42), runs (41) and extra-base hits (35). As for the Royals, even in defeat, they got some good news on Friday. First of all, All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. has at least one hit in 16 of his past 17 games. He also stole his 26th base of the season on Friday. That's six short of his total from last season and more than halfway toward his career high of 49 set in 2023. Secondly, rookie left fielder John Rave -- who has struggled all season -- hit the first two homers of his big-league career. He also drove in four runs and escaped injury while making a running catch and colliding with center fielder Kyle Isbel. In addition, Adam Frazier -- acquired on Wednesday in a trade with the Pirates -- had a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit double in the 10th inning that looked like the game-winning hit. That is, until Stowers came to the plate in the bottom of the frame. Still, the Royals are thrilled about the return of Frazier, who played for the Royals in 2024. "Adam provides a lot of leadership," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "He instills confidence in the guys. He is versatile and gives you professional at-bats with tons of contact. You can put him in any situation." Frazier, a lefty hitter, could start on Saturday when the Marlins pitch right-hander Cal Quantrill (3-8, 5.62 ERA). Quantrill is 6-0 with a 2.96 ERA in 10 career appearances against the Royals, including seven starts. Against the rest of the majors, Quantrill is 40-42 with an ERA of 4.23. The Royals will start right-hander Michael Wacha (4-9, 3.74). Wacha is 4-1 with a 3.66 ERA in six career starts against Miami. The Royals, however, are just 8-11 when Wacha pitches, including four straight losses. Wacha has lost five of his past six decisions. --Field Level Media

July 13 - Kyle Stowers hit three home runs in a five-hit, six-RBI performance against his former team as the Miami Marlins blew past the host Baltimore Orioles 11-1 in the teams' final game before the All-Star break Sunday afternoon. Stowers had talked earlier in the series about his close ties to the Orioles, who drafted him and groomed him as he rose through the minor leagues. In the series finale, he provided his power production across the first five innings, racking up three homers and five runs batted in. The three homers tied a Marlins' franchise single-game record, and he ended the day 5-for-5 with four runs scored. Otto Lopez also homered for the Marlins, who have won two games in a row and finished a 4-3 road trip that included an early stop in Cincinnati. Liam Hicks posted three hits, Agustin Ramirez added two safeties and scored three times and Jesus Sanchez and Lopez also contributed a pair of hits. Eury Perez (3-2) pitched seven shutout innings for the victory, winning a decision for the third time in three starts this month. He gave up three hits without a walk and struck out six. Brandon Young (0-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs, including four homers, in 4 1/3 innings. He was charged with nine hits while striking out four. Ramon Laureano had a home run in the eighth inning off Calvin Faucher and added a double for Baltimore, which went 3-3 on the homestand. Stowers homered in the second inning for the game's first run. His two-run shot in the third pushed the score to 5-0. Lopez made it back-to-back homers by belting his 11th. The former Oriole's two-run blast in the fifth marked his 19th home run of the season. Stowers scored his fourth run in the seventh inning after singling in the seventh. He crossed the plate on Dane Myers' two-out single. All-Star Kyle Stowers had his first three-homer game and drove in six runs against his former team, leading the Miami Marlins to an 11-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Stowers is the first Marlins player to hit three homers in a game since Brian Anderson on Sept. 18, 2020, in the second game of a doubleheader against Washington. The 27-year-old left fielder also joins fellow Marlins Mike Lowell (2004) and Cody Ross (2006) in accomplishing the feat. Ramón Laureano homered for Baltimore, which has lost consecutive games for the first time since July 1-2. Stowers led off the second inning with a shot to right against Brandon Young (0-4) to open the scoring. An inning later, he sent Young's first-pitch curveball 398 feet for a two-run blast to right-center. In the fifth, Stowers worked a 2-2 count before homering over the scoreboard in right. The 27-year-old had a base hit in the seventh and added an RBI single in the eighth for his first career five-hit game. It was Stowers fourth multi-homer game of the season. At the break, he has career highs in home runs (19) and RBIs (54). Baltimore selected Stowers in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft. He debuted in 2022, and the Orioles sent him to Miami at last year's trade deadline as part of a package for pitcher Trevor Rogers. Otto Lopez followed Stowers' homer in the third with a solo shot–the second time Miami hit consecutive home runs this season. Miami starter Eury Pérez (3-2) allowed three hits and struck out six in seven shutout innings. Young surrendered a career-high seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. The game was delayed 1 hour 38 minutes at the start due to rain. Key moment: Stowers' third homer made it 7-0 and ended the day for Young, who gave up more home runs (four) than he had in his first five starts combined (three). Key stat: Stowers is the first player to hit three home runs against Baltimore since Toronto's Bo Bichette in the second game of a doubleheader on Sept. 5, 2022. Up next: Miami hosts Kansas City after the All-Star break. RHP Charlie Morton (5-7, 5.18 ERA) starts Friday when Baltimore opens a series at Tampa Bay.
